Peer Advising Leader

In the summer of 2017, after returning from exchange at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, I applied as a Peer Advising Leader at the Global Relations Office in NUS.

Having navigated through the application processes - working with academic advisors for module mapping (credit transfer), along with the whole experience of living abroad and studying at a new institution, I wanted to help incoming and outgoing exchangers in their own journeys.

As a Peer Advising Leader, I worked in a team with 5 other like-minded individuals, all of whom were passionate about growing the Peer Advising Programme in NUS. We planned, organized and executed events and ran sporting, social-cultural events (at least 10+) for more than 1,500 exchange students every semester.

Some events I spearheaded were the Photo Contest, the Buddy Programme, the Chinatown Tour, our Dragonboat race, Welcome Party, and CNY fair. I was also in charge of handling social media, routine inquiries from prospective and current students, and ensuring consistent communication across various platforms of the Global Relations Office.

A cycling event at Pulau Ubin!

The entire experience was amazing; I made so many friends across the world, I learnt so much about different countries, cultures, and people. Practically, I gained skills in event organizing, liaising with different stakeholders, damage control and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

It was occasionally a struggle balancing this with my demanding double degree programme; but I wouldn’t have it any other way, as this experience gave me friends for life 😊
